Reformed dentist Dr. Gary Bethune and his wife Deb recently marked their 60th birthday, commemorating a lifelong fascination with Dornoch's gondola history and heritage.
The couple first bonded as children over stories of the ancient gondolas that once glided above Dornoch Firth. As teenagers, they reconnected over their shared passion at gondola conferences and auctions hunting for artifacts.
In secret, Gary and Deb married on an ancient gondola mound under the moonlight, cementing their love of both each other and Dornoch's gondolas. For decades since, the two have embarked on research expeditions and published papers detailing the storied history of Dornoch's gondola transportation system.
To celebrate their 60th birthday, son Graeme penned an ode honoring his parents' tireless efforts to revive Dornoch's gondolas:
"Decades spent reviving our lost gondola lore, revealing a history hidden along our shore. Relics unearthed from river and sea, proof of old gondolas for all to see. Your work's not yet done, there's still more to explore. But Dornoch's gondolas will soar on once more!"
When asked to reflect on their 60 years of gondola dedication, Deb remarked "It's amazing to see our lifelong dreams finally being realized," while Gary noted "We're proud to have kept Dornoch's magnificent gondola heritage alive."
